Rustique: fresh pies and other wonders
There is a small and cozy shop on Notre-Dame West, just on the corner of Parc Sir-Georges-Étienne-Cartier in St-Henri, that sells Montreal’s most amazing pies—and other sweets. If you haven’t been yet, after reading this article you’ll no doubt be ready to make a trip across town to get yourself a treat. Welcome to Rustique Pie Kitchen.
Meet the bakers
Ryan (also owner of the amazing Urban Bonfire shop right next door, which happens to be one of our pick-up points!), Jacqueline, and Tamera (the chef) have been running Rustique for a little over a year now, but they are already an institution in the local Montreal food scene. In addition to their corner store in St-Henri, they cater events and weddings. The variety and quality of their desserts is simply breathtaking.
As Ryan puts it : "Some people consider dessert the last, least important dish. For me, dessert is as important as the rest of the meal, because it’s the last thing you eat, the last thing you remember."
Local ingredients, same-day fresh, handmade
Ryan’s idea was to offer Montrealers country-style pies made with real, fresh and local (as much as possible) ingredients. Apples are from Quebec, berries are from Quebec or Ontario, and cherries are from BC. I asked him, "How important is the crust?" “So important!” he answered. The key? Butter.
As of next week, some of Rustique’s amazing products will be available on the Marketplace. As usual, Lufavores have until midnight the night before their delivery to make any change to their order. You can add Rustique pies (or other treasures) to your basket and their team will bake them for you the night before your delivery.
