Lufa Farms built the world’s first commercial rooftop greenhouse in 2011. Our vision is to change the way the world eats by growing food where people live and growing it more sustainably. We also partner with local artisans and farmers who share our vision to deliver baskets of delicious food to Montrealers every week of the year.

Yes, we offer delivery of fresh and local food baskets 52 weeks a year. There are a few select days on which deliveries are not offered, such as Christmas Day and New Year’s. In those cases, we adjust the delivery schedule to ensure that your basket is delivered the day prior to or following the statutory holiday in question. You will be notified in advance by email of any adjustments to the delivery schedule.

No. We reserve our produce for our basket subscribers.

All the produce you receive in your Lufa Farms basket is grown without chemical pesticides. We avoid mechanical washing as it would damage produce and prevent us from harvesting and delivering to you on the same day. It’s a good idea to wash your produce, as you might encounter the occasional insect or bit of dirt. You’re buying directly from farmers, after all! Washing is best done as close to eating as possible, so we leave this job to you.

Lufa Farms is unique in that our produce is grown on our urban rooftop farms and harvested the morning you receive it. Because we partner with many family farms and food artisans, we’re able to offer you a wide variety of produce and other local products that you can choose to add to your basket. You decide what you'd like to receive each week! Incredible treats such as granolas, maple syrup, jams, honeys, chocolates, teas, organic cheese, eggs, and locally-roasted coffees are available on our Marketplace.

Since we grow using only biological controls, we need to be very careful about maintaining the delicate ecosystem in our greenhouses. For this reason, we only open our greenhouses to the public during dedicated Open House weekends several times a year. Keep an eye on montreal.lufa.com/visit to learn about upcoming Open Houses.

 

Yes we do! One of the benefits of growing in greenhouses on top of buildings is that we can grow delicious veggies even in the coldest months of the year. Fresh, local tomatoes are a great way to brighten up your winter.

 

Hydroponic agriculture is a way of growing plants in water instead of soil. We are currently testing out some vertical growing systems using LEDs, but the free energy we get from the sun is so incredible that we still do mostly standard hydroponic farming. We have an amazing team of folks working in our greenhouses, so unfortunately we don't accept volunteers for the time being.
