Fall is quickly approaching, and Montrealers know that winter is never far behind.  Before you know it, it will be time to start overwintering your garden, and we're here to help! Compost mulch plays an integral part in the overwintering process, and we've put together a guide that will help you keep your plants healthy and happy all winter long to make for an incredible gardening season next year! Buy  now at just $3.50/bag to beat the overwintering rush come November!

Shrubs and Trees

Azaleas, rhododendrons, and hydrangeas benefit from a layer of winter mulch to protect them from the ice, wind and snow that come with harsh Montreal winters. Even your evergreen trees (especially broadleaf evergreens like rhododendrons) will benefit from compost mulch, as they have a tendency to dehydrate when buffeted with harsh winter winds. Spread a 3-inch layer of Lufa Farms Urban Compost around the roots of your tender shrubs and evergreens to keep them hydrated through the winter!

Rose Bushes and Other Grafted Plants

Rose bushes, in particular, need a bit of extra care over the winter to keep them strong and healthy. First remove all leaf waste from around the bases of your rose bushes to prevent any diseases from forming in the damp leaves over winter. Prune the branches back to 18 inches to prevent ice from forming and snapping the branches. Then apply an 8 inch layer of compost directly on the crown of the rosebush. Compost works and looks better than using Styrofoam Rosecones, not to mention the fact that Styrofoam is non-recyclable and never breaks down once it ends up in the landfill! Keep supporting a zero-waste cycle by utilizing nature's solution instead - compost! It also has the added benefit of providing the first feeding in the spring.

Flowerbeds

Cover your flowerbeds with a 3-inch layer of compost. Watch out for "freeze-thrust" which happens as the seasons change. When the frost melts and then re-freezes, it will thrust plants up above their cover, exposing them to the harsh elements. If this happens, gently push them back down and cover with another layer of compost mulch. This also has the benefit of supplying wonderful nutrients to your soil come spring!

Don't forget to add a bag to your next basket! Just visit the Marketplace as usual and make sure to visit the "Not for eating" category if you're looking for the compost bag!

Small or big garden? If it's a small one, offer some of your compost to your neighbor! If you'd like to order many compost bags, write to Cat at c.church@lufa.com and come here at Lufa Farms to pick them up!
