Pet food has officially launched on the Marketplace!
When we set out to expand our Pet Pantry, we knew it had to follow the same standards as everything else on the Marketplace: fresh ingredients, full traceability, and responsible production. We’ve been on the lookout for local makers who take pet nutrition just as seriously - placing sustainability and the well-being of our furry friends first.
We started small, testing additions from our longtime partners like Taylor Fish Company’s upcycled dog treats and Mano Verde’s catnip boxes. But now, we’re stepping it up. As of today, you’ll find pre-portioned, raw pet food and treats on the Marketplace, thanks to our new pals at The Raw Kitchen.
The Raw Kitchen: looking out for your pets with fresh, responsible food.
While travelling to British Columbia for work, Sarah Gravel came across a family of puppies and their mom living on a local farm at the base of Mount Mackenzie. One pup in particular stole her heart. She brought him home, named him Mackenzie, and as a canine behaviour coach, naturally started looking into feeding him the very best. But as she researched store-bought kibble, Sarah was met with more questions than answers. Most options were packed with additives and preservatives, which made her wonder: if we steer clear of harmful additives in our food, shouldn’t we do the same for man’s best friend?
So Sarah took matters into her own hands - preparing homemade meals for Mackenzie using fresh meat, bones, and offal to make sure each batch met his nutritional needs. He thrived on them, and soon, her clients took notice. Adopting the same diet, tails wagged, and owners saw their own cats and dogs’ coats grow shinier, energy levels climb, and digestion improve. That’s when Sarah knew it was time to make her recipes accessible to all and in 2008, she officially founded Mackenzie Pet Food in Bromont, the parent company of The Raw Kitchen.
Taking high quality pet food to another level.
- Commercial pet food makes a lot of promises, but The Raw Kitchen’s lineup stays simple. With the help of agronomists and nutritionists, the team crafts recipes for both cats and dogs using traceable, human-grade ingredients to boost the quality and safety of the final product. In fact, 90% of their ingredients come from Quebec and Canada - meaning the meats, fruits, vegetables, and even the herbs and spices are the same quality you’d find at your local butcher shop or market.
- The team goes the extra mile to keep their food and business clean. Sarah and her crew work closely with local producers to offer fully traceable meals, while their state-of-the-art production facility leans on new innovations to maintain freshness. Each recipe goes beyond the basics, featuring whole ingredients like cranberries, blueberries, broccoli, and zucchini - all mixed, shaped into medallions, and frozen within 30 minutes to lock in all the nutrients.
- Sarah makes it her mission to educate her customers about the benefits of a raw diet. Her website includes a step-by-step guide to help pet owners choose the right recipe and ensure a smooth transition. And each meal is clearly portioned based on pet size, reducing waste, and ready-to-serve for simpler feedings. They even offer single-servings so your picky eater can sample different flavours before committing.
There’s plenty more to come for the furry Lufavores in your life.
Whether you’ve been feeding raw for years or you’re curious about making the switch, The Raw Kitchen is a great place to start. And this is just the beginning. Our team is already working on adding more local, budget-friendly, and responsible pet food options - along with treats, toys, and accessories to keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching.
