August is here

Hey Lufavores,

For all of you who were enjoying the construction holiday: welcome back! There’s been a lot of stuff going on at Lufa Farms in the past couple of weeks, and we hope you get a chance to check it out.

This week we’re continuing to launch some amazing new products. We have a few new baked goods courtesy of Le Fromentier, including two kinds of freshly made pizza. You’ll definitely want to snag a pesto-tomato pizza for dinner next week.

Though it’s still early in orchard season, we now have two varieties of apples: Vista Bella, a tart dessert apple (not a bad idea to use if you want to get a head start on practicing for fall apple pies); and Melba, a yellow and crimson colored variety with sweet, crisp white flesh. You’ll also see a few other seasonal vegetables on the Marketplace: fennel, yellow onions, goat's horn tomatoes, and two types of shallot. Though some of you got to try out Favuzzi's olive oil and balsamic already, next week will be the first full week with it on the Marketplace.

Not to bum anyone out, but summer’s already winding down. While we’re excited for the coming fall season, we also want to make sure that everyone takes full advantage of the time before Labour Day to get their summer cooking in–especially barbecues. In this spirit, we’ve decided to put the excellent relishes from Les Artisans de l’Aube, Jardins d’Autrefois, and Les Framboisiers C. Lapage on special. We’d give you a recipe, but we trust that you know what to do with it (hint: put it on a rhymes with "not fog"). If you’ve never been to the Windy City, though, you might want to give the Chicago-style hot dog a try. And just so that you get a complete meal when barbecuing, you’ll also see Pur Délys’ beautiful miniature corn–now in a quantity of 2 lbs–and Ferme Biophile Senc’s blueberries (which, no kidding, are absolutely unbelieveable) for a special end-of-summer price.

You know that we at Lufa Farms are all about reducing waste, but also maintaining the highest, freshest quality for our products. With this in mind, we added a product called "Jamming fruits" to the Marketplace. If we have extra fruit that no longer meets our high quality standards, but is still good for making jam or marmalade, you can add it to your basket at a reduced price and start making some delicious spreads for the winter months.

As always, we want to thank all of you for supporting us and our local farm partners. We wanted to do something special for those of you who go the extra mile and get most of your groceries from our Marketplace, so last week we started adding a gift to baskets over $50. Last week’s gift was nougat, which is now available to all of our customers in three flavors. This week, we’re over-the-top excited to give Athena cantaloupes (the first melons of the season!) as a gift.

First cantaloupe of the season!

Happy August,

The Lufa Farms team
