Preserving homemade taste one can at a time, thanks to Sprague soups.
Canned veg, fruit, and meals have been household staples for ages. Thanks to our new Ontarian friends at Sprague, canned soups are making their debut on our Marketplace with their organic line packed with local veg.
A family-owned cannery that's been passed down five generations.
Back in 1925, J. Grant Sprague laid the cornerstone of the cannery in the heart of Prince Edward County. As the preservation industry gained traction, Grant’s entrepreneurial spirit seized the opportunity to preserve the freshness of locally grown seasonal veg. Following the success of the business, Grant passed the torch to his youngest son, setting off a family legacy and slowly introducing new lines of products along the way.
Since 2009, Rick Sprague (Grant's great-grandson) has been steering the ship, and as chief product officer and flavour maestro, he’s the mastermind behind their responsible recipes. Together with his wife Jane, their son Keenan, and Keenan's wife Catherine who also play key roles in driving the Sprague legacy forward, the family’s on a mission to broaden the horizons of their soup line.
From locally grown ingredients to preserved pantry staples.
Starting with staples like canned tomatoes and pumpkin, the Sprague business soon expanded into tomato juices, corn, and fruit purées. But with the introduction of home freezers and frozen foods, the canned goods industry eventually began to drop off. To stay ahead, the family diversified their offerings, adding canned beans to the mix. It wasn't until the '80s that Sprague ventured into soups, which have since become their tried-and-true.
The perfect combination of great ingredients and responsible packaging.
Their dedication to preserving local crops and their efforts to steer clear of preservatives and unnecessary fillers makes Sprague a perfect fit for our Marketplace. They're all about keeping it local, with organic veggies and legumes mostly grown in North America and prioritizing Canadian ingredients whenever possible. For an added plus, they remain eco-conscious about their packaging, using infinitely recyclable steel cans with BPA-free lining.
Sprague’s focus is on delivering a homemade taste when coming up with recipes for their line up including Quebec-style split pea, Caribbean-style black bean, Tuscan-style minestrone, butternut squash and more!
