What's coming this spring
It's finally spring: buds are starting to appear and you can see people smiling all around the city! For newer subscribers who didn’t receive baskets last spring or summer, here's an overview of the varieties that you'll be able to find on the Marketplace within the next few weeks. (And there will be so much more throughout the summer!)
Fiddleheads
These are the first fruits of spring to break the frozen ground, and some of our gatherers are already watching their usual (secret) spots so they're prepared the first harvest in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Fiddleheads are available in the spring only. If you've never cooked them, make sure to boil before eating! To be continued...
Asparagus
A sign of the end of spring and beginning of summer, Quebec asparagus is picked in mid to late May. Did you know that an asparagus plant is already three years old by the time you harvest the first crop? But they'll go on producing asparagus for 10 to 15 years after that!
Radishes, rhubarb, and different lettuces will also be waiting for you towards end of spring. We are working with our partner farmers to find the perfect mix of wonderful seasonal produce for the Marketplace. On top of your favorite fruits and veggies, you will continue to discover new products such as organic milk, cheese, fresh breads, and more. Our Marketplace evolves with the seasons and as we find new local treasures!
New plants in greenhouses
New plants of Lebanese cucumbers just arrived in the Ahuntsic greenhouse (those who came to the open house last weekend saw them!) and some new tomato plants just started at Laval. Be patient: these tomatoes will be ready for harvest in a little less than two months.

Lauren, our Greenhouse Director, has an exciting project coming and we wanted to give you a sneak peek of the research she's been doing. We'll fill you in more over the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
Compost is back
Our famous vegetarian urban compost is back! Our composter and our team have worked throughout the winter to prepare it, and you can now get bags for your 2014 gardening season. Add a bag to your basket and give your indoor and outdoor plants the boost they need after this long winter.
