The tough search for the next generation at Vallons Maraîchers.
Tucked into the rolling hills of the Eastern Townships, Vallons Maraîchers has been farming responsibly in Compton since 1996. Founded by Jacques Blain and his wife Josée Gaudette, this 70-acre farm is full to the brim, growing more produce than you can imagine. After nearly 30 years of hard work in the fields, Jacques is ready to put away his plow and enjoy retirement - but finding someone to take over the reins isn’t all that simple. Between the financial hurdles and the demands of managing such a diverse operation, potential successors are few and far between.

Vallons Maraîchers has a team ready to grow - if the right support comes through. Over the years, Jacques has seen some strong candidates step up (including team members who know the farm inside out) but the real challenge for these eager farmers is finding the means to afford it. Jacques believes more flexible financial aid could make all the difference, giving the next generation the chance to take over
Keeping the farm’s organic roots alive is key but time is running out. Jacques hopes to hand over the farm to a cluster of families or individuals who can share the workload and enjoy a better quality of life, all while staying true to its organic practices. But if no one steps up soon, he might have to sell it in parts or to larger conventional farmers.
After 21 seasons, Jacques is eager to pass on his wisdom to the next generation. Farming calls for patience, resilience, and passion. For those hoping to follow in his footsteps, Jacques believes it's important to take a moment to appreciate the nature around you and to lean on your team for support. In the end, it’s those small moments and final efforts that make all the difference.
For now, Vallons Maraîchers is keeping us well-stocked with their root vegetables. As experts in winter storage, they’re sending us Nantaise and rainbow carrots, a variety of radishes, beets, and parsnips, all fresh and ready to carry us through the colder months.
Psst! If you’re thinking about getting into farming, Jacques is all ears for those interested in taking over Vallons Maraîchers - who knows, the farm’s future may lie in the hands of a Lufavore.
